In 2010 the Norfolk County Municipal Council election was one of the lowest voter turnouts on record. Of the 46,556 eligible voters only 16,621 turned out to cast a ballot. Voter apathy? Absolutely. How else can it be explained that two thirds of the population couldn't be bothered to cast a vote?
We're hearing from a lot of younger Citizen's and the consensus with them seems to be that Council will just do what they want anyway so what's the point of voting? It's very unfortunate that this generation views politics this way and with all of the scandals going on can you blame them?
The Senate scandal, the gas plant closure, criminal charges being laid on the Mayor of London who's still in power while the Toronto Mayor has his power taken away from him and the list goes on and on.
With so many things broken in our system can people really be blamed for not wanting to vote? Even the 1st Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John A. MacDonald resigned from his position in 1873 for his part in the Pacific Scandal. Does it ever end? We can only hope.
The only true way is public awareness and to keep a watchful eye to mitigate the damage that can be caused. One of the main reasons that the Norfolk Voice was created was for these exact purposes. In the rural world there's a disconnect at times with our Community as people go about their daily lives. We're here to inform.
Certain dealings can be done with no one ever knowing and we only have the Press and rumour to go by. If the Press is unable, does not or cannot release this information how will Citizen's even know what is going on around them? If a reporter does not do his due diligence and just takes his information for granted will the truth ever be reveled and how would you know?
2014 Candidate information can be found here.
What we do know is that WE vote for the people that are there to put our interests first.

Langton Councilor Roger Geysens only had to pay his nomination fees.
Of all of the above only Betty Chanyi has not announced her intention to run again.
Mayor Travale has taken to Twitter to announce that Charlie Luke is rumoured to be going on a run for Mayor himself. Nothing like promoting the competition. Does Mr Luke even have a Twitter Account?
We're sure that a consultant can help him with his Social Media campaign....
According to the @ilovenorfolk Twitter account there's even a fake twitter account for Mayor Travale. There appears to be an epidemic of seemingly duplicate accounts being created in a very short span.
Norfolk County hasn't seen this much action since the revived Walsingham Senators baseball club debut this year! It could lead to a very interesting race.
We should let our followers know that if you don't like high taxes and seeing your money wasted keep it away from #ilovenorfolk. They don't seem to mind and certainly don't want the cat out of the bag. Only positive thoughts please. Pass the Koolaid, drink it down. Live the dream. Question nothing and sign your cheque please.
A 2.57% increase to cover rising OPP costs and a 3.8% increase in County operations. Seems that the Cops take all the heat (and bullets) for the increase but the County's seismic increase is a footnote. Somehow this adds up to a 7% tax increase but don't worry 7 is a lucky number.
Try the lottery or as mentioned above, another glass of koolaid for you oh lucky Citizen?
Pass the koolaid please. We're having a hard time swallowing this. #ilovenorfolk.
